Why Your Clear Aligners Are Turning Yellow & What to Do About It

Clear aligners like Invisalign have become a popular choice for straightening teeth because they are discreet, comfortable, and removable. One of their biggest benefits is that they are nearly invisible, allowing you to smile confidently during treatment. But if your aligners start to look yellow, that transparency can quickly fade. If you’ve noticed discoloration, you’re not alone. Here’s why clear aligners turn yellow and what you can do to keep them looking fresh.

Why Do Clear Aligners Turn Yellow?

Drinking Staining Beverages

Coffee, tea, red wine, and soda are some of the biggest culprits when it comes to staining. If you drink these beverages while wearing your aligners—or forget to rinse your mouth afterward—the pigments can cling to the trays, leaving behind a yellow tint.

Poor Oral Hygiene

If you don’t brush and floss thoroughly before reinserting your aligners, food particles and plaque can become trapped. Over time, this buildup not only affects your teeth but also transfers to the trays, causing them to discolor.

Not Cleaning Aligners Properly

Aligners aren’t meant to be cleaned with toothpaste, which can be abrasive and scratch the plastic. Using improper cleaning methods or skipping regular rinsing can cause yellowing and even odors.

Extended Wear Beyond the Recommended Time

Each set of aligners is designed to be worn for about one to two weeks. If you wear the same pair for longer than instructed, natural buildup from saliva and bacteria can discolor them.

What to Do About Yellow Aligners

Follow a Consistent Cleaning Routine

Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water every time you take them out. Gently brush them with a soft toothbrush (not the same one you use for your teeth) and clear, unscented antibacterial soap. Avoid toothpaste, as it can scratch and dull the surface.

Use Professional Cleaning Crystals or Tablets

Most aligner brands provide cleaning crystals or recommend effervescent cleaning tablets. Soaking your trays in these solutions once a day helps remove stains, bacteria, and odors.

Remove Aligners Before Eating or Drinking

The only thing you should consume while wearing aligners is plain water. Always remove them before eating or drinking anything else, and rinse your mouth before putting them back in.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Brushing and flossing after meals prevents plaque from transferring to your trays. Clean teeth mean clean aligners.

Stick to the Replacement Schedule

Remember that aligners aren’t permanent—they’re meant to be replaced every one to two weeks. If your trays are discolored toward the end of their cycle, don’t worry too much. Just be sure to start with a clean, clear set for the next stage of treatment.

Yellowing aligners can be frustrating, but with the right care, you can keep them looking nearly invisible. By avoiding staining foods and drinks, practicing good oral hygiene, and cleaning your trays properly, you’ll maintain both the appearance of your aligners and the health of your smile. Clear aligners are a commitment, but with proper care, they’ll stay just as clear as the day you got them.
