If you\u2019re suffering from a dental emergency, you may be worried about what to expect at your emergency dentist\u2019s<\/a> appointment, but the good news is that there\u2019s nothing to be afraid of. Here\u2019s what will likely happen, and why there\u2019s no reason to be scared!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Step One: The Exam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you arrive at your emergency dental appointment, the front office team will check you in and bring you back for your exam. Here, your dentist will examine your mouth and may take X-rays or other images. Once the exact problem is diagnosed, your dentist will begin treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step Two: Anesthetic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before any work begins, your dentist will provide an anesthetic to numb your mouth, so you are comfortable during treatment. This may be a topical solution or may be delivered via injection. If it is an injection, your dentist will apply a topical numbing agent first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step Three: Treatment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While not all advanced treatments can be done at an emergency dental appointment, your dentist may need to extract a tooth, perform a root canal, replace a filling or crown, or suture an incision. If the treatment can wait or if you do not have time for the full procedure, your dentist will provide a temporary solution to stabilize your condition and alleviate any pain until you can return. Otherwise, they will treat your condition while you are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step Four: Prescriptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you need any prescriptions to treat your condition, your dentist will prescribe them at this time. You could require antibiotics, prescription mouthwash, or pain relievers, depending on the problem. Be sure to use them only as directed, as failing to do so could slow your healing process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step Five: Follow-Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you are released, be sure to follow up with your dentist as advised. You may need to return for a second appointment in a few days or weeks, or for the main treatment if it was not done during your emergency visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step Six: Maintain Your Oral Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finally, once your treatment is complete, it is important to maintain your oral hygiene to avoid future dental emergencies. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day, and floss once a day, and don\u2019t forget to return to your dentist twice a year for your regular, biannual exam and cleaning appointments, as these are the easiest ways to spot potential problems before they become an urgent matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, dental emergencies happen, but your dentist is here to help you feel calm, comfortable, and pain-free. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately. If you are experiencing an urgent dental emergency, call your emergency dentist as soon as possible for the best care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
